Domain Transfers

Preparing a Domain For Transfer

Domain transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one registrar to another. Domains eligible for a transfer must have been with the current registrar for at least 60 days. Preparation for common top-level domains (TLDs) involve requesting an EPP transfer key with .UK domain transfers being the exception.

To prepare a domain for transfer, the registrant will need to unlock the domain and then request the EPP key.  Transfers take between five to seven days to complete from the date you initiate the transfer with your new provider.

Unlocking Your Domain

To prepare a domain for transfer, the registrant will need to unlock the domain and then request the EPP key.  Transfers take between five to seven days to complete from the date you initiate the transfer with your new provider.

You'll Need to Login to Wherever your domain is currently registered. Ordinarily Choose My Domains will list the domains you own. Select the domain you wish to transfer. Go to General Settings and Select Disable Registrar Lock and auto renew.

Request The Transfer Code

A transfer code, EPP key, or authorization / secret code are all terms for the unique code needed to transfer your domain. While this unique code is valid for several days, we suggest initiating the transfer immediately. The EPP key can still be requested for expired domains, however, the registrant email cannot be changed after expiration. The Domain Transfer Order with IMC Webhost contains the space on the form for to enter the authorization (EPP) code. Without it a transfer cannot occur.

Ensuring transfers add a year of registration

There is a fee for the transfer. This fee is going to the new Registration Agent like IMC Webhost. The gaining registrar will typically add an extra year to the domain name registration upon transfer completion.

However, if a domain expires, is renewed during the grace period, and then transferred between registrars within 45 days of being renewed, the gaining registrar will charge for the transfer, but no additional year will be added. This is a registry restriction and applies to all registrars.

Preventing Domain Downtime

To prevent your domain from going down during a transfer, we recommend using third-party nameservers or arranging for the receiving registrars' nameservers ready to use.  Upon transferring your domain out of most Registrars their DNS service will terminate when they receive a transfer out request. Using IMC Webhost Nameservers will keep your domain alive.

Issues or Problems With a Transfer

Access control violation name locking not allowed

A common reason for receiving this error is if the domain is under a 60-day transfer lock. The 60-day transfer lock applies when you update any of the following registrant contact information on any gTLD domain names (non-country code domains) in your account.

  • Registrant First Name
  • Registrant Last Name
  • Registrant Organization Name
  • Registrant Email

Expediting An Outgoing Domain Transfer

Once the transfer process has started, the registrant's email address will receive the approval email.  Registrants can expedite their outgoing transfer by confirming the link.
